NoteMagician Database Basics

About NoteMagician’s Database

NoteMagician maintains data files in several places. The main data folder, however, is the one you selected during the first execution of NoteMagician. The default location of that folder on Windows 7, 10 or 11 is: “C:\users\your_user_name\AppData\Roaming\Nxgen\NoteMagician”. While that appears like an obscure name, the default folder is actually the location where Windows prefers applications to store their data so that users are guaranteed to have the permissions to access their data.

The table below shows you the names and locations of the main NoteMagician data files.

Maintaining Your Database

NoteMagician’s File menu contains a Database option to maintain your database. The table below describes the database maintenance options:

MENU ITEM

DESCRIPTION

Verify Only

Checks the integrity of the databases. The main database file is checked against the various plugin databases to insure that each item in the main database has a  matching item in the plugin database and vice versa. Any errors are listed in the dialog presented.

Verify and Repair

Does the same thing as the Verify option, but removes entries in databases that appear to be “orphaned”.

Deleting Unused Audio Files

If you have recorded audio files in some notes that are no longer needed (perhaps the notes were deleted), you can have the Verify and Repair option delete those “orphaned” files. During the operation you will first see a dialog similar to the one shown below:

If you respond yes, and there are audio files in the Note plugin data folder that are not used by any note, you will see a dialog allowing you to choose which files to delete. You will have the opportunity to play the clip to verify that you do not want it to be saved:

Simply check the files you want to delete. If they have names that do not remind you of what was recorded, you may select the file and then press Play to play the audio. Once you press OK, those files that remain checked will be permanently deleted.
