Installation Questions
Do I have to uninstall before installing a new version?
If you have obtained an update through the Check for Updates menu option, and your version is a fully licensed version or Free version designated as “released” as opposed to a beta version, then the update can be installed right over existing installations. However, it never hurts to uninstall a previous version (see the next question and answer).
Will I lose my data if I uninstall NoteMagician?
Uninstalling NoteMagician will not remove any of your item data and/or program settings. If, however, you are uneasy about doing an uninstall before an upgrade or reinstall, you should perform a backup of your data.
General Questions
I don’t hear a sound when a reminder pops up. What could be the problem?
Assuming that your sound card is set up properly, go to View Preferences menu item. Then choose Sounds Preferences. Look through the list to find the Reminder Wakeup Call. Highlight that item and see if a Current Sound file name is shown. If so, try to play the file. If it still doesn’t play, make sure that the file is a valid .wav or .wma file. If so, then contact technical support.
Also check the View Preferences General setting “Delay events that play a sound until previous sounds finishes. Just in case some other NoteMagician sound was playing, the reminder popup sound may be suppressed. Checking this preference will cause NoteMagician to wait for pending sounds to finish playing first.
How many items can NoteMagician store?
There is no limit other than the your disk space.
Will deleting virtual items and/or folders delete the files from my hard disk?
No. Deleting virtual items will only remove the information maintained by NoteMagician about a file on your system. If the item(s) you delete were in a Virtual Folder that had automatic updating set, then the items will, however, be recreated during the next update.
Is there and iPhone or Android version of NoteMagician?
Not at this time. Both the iOS and Android operating system include a rudimentary note taking app, and typically separate calendar apps, making the usefulness of NoteMagician moot.
Troubleshooting
When Windows shuts down I see a “vs7jit.exe DLL initialization failed” error. What do I do?
This is a mysterious error that happens on occasion when you shut down Windows. It may also ask you to end NoteMagician now because it is not responding. As best we can tell this is a strangeness caused when shutting down Windows with a .Net program running. Ignore the error and allow NoteMagician to end. No data will be lost.
After installing and first running NoteMagician, I get an error before the main screen appears.
Usually this happens only if you do not have Microsoft’s .Net Framework 3.5 or later installed. Please use Windows Update (or click on this link: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) to see if you are offered to install a recent version of the .Net Framework. If so, install it and then use Windows Update again to check for any available service packs for that version of .Net.
Why can’t I cancel a Find Progress dialog.
In an effort to maximize the speed at which NoteMagician can zip through checking your items during a search, the Cancel button may not be responsive. Some plugins, such as the Browser Plugin which has to load web pages, may let the Cancel button activate, while other plugins will work as fast as they can and not check to see if you wish to cancel
NoteMagician appears in my task bar but I cannot see the user interface.
There are times that for no apparent reason, the main NoteMagician user interface might not be visible even though there appears to be a NoteMagician icon on your task bar. This may happen with a minor corruption in the NoteMagician preferences database. You can reset NoteMagician’s window positions by choosing: View Window
Reset Window Position from NoteMagician’s main menu (if you can see the Main Menu bar, or right click on the tray icon and choose Reset Window Position.
